The biggest mistake contractors make with Facebook ads
Most contractors who say “Facebook ads don’t work” never actually ran Facebook ads — they boosted posts. That one mistake is the difference between $60 leads and $600 leads. Here’s what’s really going wrong, and the simple structure that makes Meta ads produce for the trades.

The biggest mistake is boosting posts instead of running real campaigns. Boosting optimizes for likes and reach; a proper campaign (with a conversion objective, pixel tracking, and a real offer) optimizes for leads. Fix that and four things follow: use a conversion-objective campaign with pixel tracking, lead with a concrete offer (not “we do great work”), tighten your geo-targeting to the areas you actually serve, and follow up fast because Meta leads are lower-intent than search. Done right, contractors generate Meta leads in roughly the $35–$120 range depending on trade; done as boosted posts, they light money on fire.
Boosting a post is not advertising
The “Boost Post” button is the most expensive button in the trades. It’s designed to be easy, and it optimizes for the wrong thing: engagement. Facebook happily spends your budget getting likes and comments from people who will never hire you, because that’s what “boost” asks it to do.
A real campaign, built in Ads Manager with a conversion or lead objective, tells Meta’s algorithm to find people likely to actually contact you — and gives it the pixel data to learn who those people are. Same platform, completely different outcome. This single distinction explains most “Facebook doesn’t work for contractors” stories.
The campaign structure that works
The common structural error after boosting is dumping everything into one campaign. A properly built home-services Meta account usually runs three: an awareness campaign to build recognition, a lead-generation campaign targeting in-market homeowners, and a retargeting campaign that converts people who already engaged. Separate budgets, audiences, and creative — combining objectives into one campaign is a top reason accounts underdeliver.
You don’t need all three on day one, but you do need a conversion objective and pixel tracking from the start. Everything else builds on that.
Lead with a real offer, not a slogan
On search, the person already wants the service. On Meta, they weren’t looking — you’re creating the demand — so a vague “quality work, free estimates” ad gets ignored. What works is a concrete, specific offer that gives a scrolling homeowner a reason to stop: a seasonal tune-up special, a specific dollar amount off an install, a free inspection with a clear scope. Case after case shows the difference between expensive leads and cheap ones is usually the offer, the geo-targeting, and the creative — not the platform.
Tight geo-targeting and phone-shot creative
Two cheap fixes that dramatically cut cost per lead:
- Tighten the geo. Advertising to a 35-mile radius when you profitably serve 12 wastes budget on jobs you don’t want. Target the areas and ZIP codes you actually serve.
- Use real, phone-shot creative. Video and authentic before/after clips shot on the owner’s phone consistently outperform polished stock — and video can cut cost per lead substantially versus static images.
These pair with the content approach in our social media guide.
Follow up fast — Meta leads are lower intent
Here’s the trade-off with Meta: because you interrupted someone rather than answering a search, the lead is lower-intent than a Google lead. That’s fine — it’s cheaper — but it means speed and qualification matter more. A Meta lead that sits for a day goes cold fast. Contractors who call within minutes convert dramatically better; a common close rate on Meta lead forms is roughly 8–15%, and anything below that is usually a follow-up problem, not an ad problem. See why response time decides who books.
Realistic budget: plan on roughly $1,500–$3,000/month in ad spend to keep a campaign learning; below about $1,500 many accounts never exit the learning phase. Want your Meta setup audited before you spend more? Book a free 30-minute Revenue Plan with Engineered Reach.
