Citation Building for Contractors: Consistency Over Volume

Citations still matter for local ranking and entity confidence, but the 2015 playbook of 100 low-quality directories is dead. Focus on accuracy, the platforms that rank for your money terms, and the sources AI systems retrieve from.

Updated July 2026 · Engineered Reach

The short answer

Pick one exact business name, one primary phone, one address format. Claim and correct the directories that already rank for “best [trade] in [city].” Ignore mass submission services that create more inconsistency than they solve. Consistency beats volume.

What still works

  • Core platforms: Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp, BBB, Angi (claimed correctly), Facebook
  • Industry and association directories that actually get traffic or links
  • Supplier and manufacturer dealer locators
  • Local chamber and community sites when they are real and maintained

What to stop doing

Do not blast the same data into every obscure directory. Do not let old phone numbers and name variants sit uncorrected. Those stale listings actively create entity ambiguity that hurts both map pack and AI citation odds.
