How HVAC Contractors Rank in the Google Map Pack

Relevance and prominence are the levers you control. Get the primary category right, fill services completely, install a review velocity system, add real local photos, and build off-profile signals. Distance is geography; everything else is process.

The short answer

Fix primary category and services first. Install a per-job review ask. Upload real truck and jobsite photos monthly. Keep NAP identical everywhere. Then work the slower prominence levers: links, mentions, and consistent on-site relevance. Most HVAC companies that “can’t rank” have never done the first three systematically.

The three published factors

Google states relevance, distance, and prominence. You cannot change distance. Relevance is mostly on-profile (categories, services, description, site content). Prominence is mostly off-profile (reviews, links, mentions, overall web presence).

Highest-leverage moves for HVAC

  • Primary category that matches the work you most want (and that ranking competitors use)
  • Complete services list in homeowner language (AC repair, furnace replacement, heat pump, maintenance plans, etc.)
  • Review velocity of 2–4+ per month with specific language
  • Real photos of trucks, techs, and completed installs in your actual market
  • Honest service-area settings (hide address if pure service-area business)
