What is Answer Engine Optimization? (plain English)
You’ve probably started hearing “AEO” alongside “SEO,” and most explanations are jargon soup. Here’s the plain-English version for contractors: what Answer Engine Optimization actually is, why it showed up now, how it’s different from regular SEO, and what you actually do about it.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is making your business the one an AI names when someone asks it a question — like “who’s a good plumber near me.” SEO is about ranking a link in a list of results; AEO is about being cited in the answer itself, in tools like Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. It matters because more homeowners now ask an AI for a recommendation before they ever scroll a list of links. The good news: the basics of AEO overlap heavily with good local SEO — a complete, consistent business profile, real reviews, and clear answer-first content.
What AEO actually means
For twenty years, search worked one way: you type a query, Google shows a list of links, you click one. SEO is the practice of getting your link high in that list.
Now a second thing happens. You ask a question — in Google’s AI Overview at the top of the page, or in ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity — and instead of a list, you get a written answer that names a few sources or businesses. Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of being one of the businesses named in that answer. Same goal as SEO — get found — but a different mechanism: being cited, not just ranked.
Why it matters now (for contractors)
A growing share of homeowners now ask an AI assistant “who should I call for X near me” before they ever look at a traditional list of links. If the AI doesn’t name you, you never enter the conversation — and you won’t even see it in your analytics, because there was no click to measure. That’s what makes AEO both important and easy to miss.
This doesn’t replace SEO — plenty of people still search the old way, and AI answers often pull from the same signals. It’s an additional front you now have to show up on.
How AEO differs from SEO
The practical differences:
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a link in a list | Get named in the answer |
| Result | A clickable position | A citation / mention |
| Wins on | Relevance, links, position | Clarity, trust, corroboration |
| Key insight | Higher is better | You can be cited without ranking #1 |
One crucial point: being cited in an AI answer is not the same as ranking first — a large share of pages cited in AI answers don’t rank in the top ten. So AEO is its own game, not just a byproduct of SEO.
What you actually do about it
The reassuring part: the AEO basics overlap heavily with good local SEO, so you’re not starting over. The essentials:
- A complete, consistent Google Business Profile — it’s the primary source AI uses to describe local businesses.
- Consistent business info everywhere (same name, address, phone) so AI can confirm your details across sources — corroboration is how it decides who to trust.
- Recent reviews with owner responses.
- Answer-first content — pages that state the answer clearly, with FAQs and schema, so an engine can lift it.
That’s the foundation. The deeper how-to is in how to get cited in Google AI Overviews and AI search visibility for contractors.
Where to start
Don’t overthink it. Start by asking the AI tools the questions your customers ask — “best [trade] in [your city]” — and see whether you’re named. If a competitor is and you’re not, that gap is your roadmap: usually it traces back to their profile, reviews, or content being clearer and more consistent than yours. Fix the foundations and you show up in both AI answers and traditional search, because they draw on the same signals.
